Unicorn Cup: game-changing sustainable period products

Welcome back to another Love Your Period interview with the women who are running incredible reusable period product businesses. So far, we have covered reusable period pads and reusable period pants. Now it’s the turn of the menstrual cup.
Julie Fyfe runs Unicorn Cup, a menstrual cup business based in Scotland. The Unicorn Cup and menstrual cups are a reusable alternative to tampons. Julie is also a passionate and energetic educator on the use of menstrual cups and reusable period products in general.
We sat down with Julie to find out more about why she started Unicorn Cup and why she is such a strong advocate for making the switch to reusable options.
Hi Julie, can you share some of your past experiences that influenced your decision to start your business, Unicorn Cup?
As a sufferer of PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), diagnosed 22 years ago at the age of 22, most of my adult life was affected with how heavy my periods could be when I had them (as they could be very irregular but VERY heavy). While in the US, having read about period cups, I decided to try one and was blown away by how incredible they were! I remember thinking 'why do I live in the UK and have never been educated properly about cups as an option to manage periods?'.
Were there any challenges you faced when starting a menstrual product/cup business, and how did you overcome them?
The challenges have been huge. I'm completely self-funded and relied on my salary and bonus to launch Unicorn Cup, a business selling a product that most people had no awareness of at all, and that you have to wear vaginally.....I didn't make it easy for myself!
What is your favourite part of running Unicorn Cup?
The feedback... when someone emails or messages to say that using a Unicorn Cup has changed their life. That sounds 'cheesy' but it's the most common feedback I receive from people and it's the most rewarding thing as a business owner!
What do you love most about menstrual cups?
They can be used for up to 10 years, hold five times as much as a regular pad or tampon, don't leak, can't be felt when worn, are comfortable, don't contain toxins, don't absorb vaginal fluid unlike tampons.......there are SO many reasons I love them!
What feedback have you received from customers about your menstrual cup? What difference has it made to them and their menstrual health?
Trustpilot has some amazing reviews! From people who weren't able to go out during their period for fear of leaking; people who can now do activities they'd normally skip during their period; people who NEVER used internal period products as they were terrified of tampons…but now have a new lease of life during their period thanks to using a cup!
