What happens to food waste?
Find out what happens to the food waste collected by local councils in Essex.
Did you know?
When food waste is recycled, it is transformed into energy and fertiliser.
Where your food waste goes
In Essex, food waste collected from your kerbside is taken to an anaerobic digestion facility in Dagenham.
The recycling process
- the food waste is turned into a 'soup' and fed into an enclosed tank
- it is broken down by micro-organisms to create a biogas. This is a form of green energy that is used to generate electricity and heat
- after this process, we are left with a fertiliser which can be used by farmers
