Simpler Recycling for residents
What will Simpler Recycling mean for households in Essex?
You may have noticed more businesses separating their general rubbish, recycling, and food waste. This is because, since 31 March 2025, all businesses with more than 10 full-time employees have been required to do so. These regulations will apply to businesses of all sizes from 31 March 2027.
From 31 March 2026, local authorities in England must ensure that all households, including flats, have separate collections for general waste, recycling, and food waste.
Depending on the arrangements of your local waste collector, this may include separate collections for paper and card from other recyclable materials such as plastic, metal, and glass.
From 31 March 2027, the kerbside recycling of soft plastics, like plastic bags, will also be made mandatory, enabling residents to recycle more.
Why is this change being made?
This legislation aims to reduce the 'postcode lottery' of waste collection services across England, giving residents a more consistent recycling experience regardless of location.
Clearer and more consistent kerbside collection services across the country should help residents recycle more effectively and with greater confidence.
Most kerbside collection services provided by local authorities in Essex already meet Simpler Recycling standards. Residents can expect further updates and any service changes from their local council closer to the 31 March 2026 deadline.
